Avianna Cosplay [x]

Version: Full Armor
Series: Willow
Completed: August 2013
Convention Worn: Dragon*Con 2013

Why?
Because its Sorsha! When I was little, my mom loved Val Kilmer and we were both fantasy lovers. She was completely okay with watching this movie over and over because of Val and I was happy watching Sorsha kick butt and take names. When I was little I would play Sorsha on the play ground and pretend sticks were her sword. So I felt I owed it to my young self to actually be her.

How I Made It
A lot of research went into this costume. A ton. For a while I was gonna keep pushing this costume back, and keep pushing it back, until I felt confident with leather. But when I discovered that Willow was turning 25 years old and they had an HD release happening this year, I decided to just jump in.

First I took a ton of screenshots of what I already had in the old DVD. I started things I knew would look okay. The chainmail cowl wouldn’t be to hard, but I didn’t want to do things that were detailed that I could hardly see in the old version. I chainmailed and bought supplies until March, when I bought the new HD/BluRay and watched it for screenshots. To my dismay the costume changes a lot throughout the movie, so I went with whatever I saw that was comfortable. (She wears a chainmail shirt under her breastplate, but only in one part. All the other parts of the movie it looks like a woven cotton or wool. Sometimes her boots have a higher heel to them, most times they are flat. Ect. Ect.)

I consulted a few of my friends (Envel Cosplay & Forcebewitya) about leather along the way and watched a TON of videos online. I bought some leather from Tandy and I was on my way. My friend Jez helped me form the leather to fit my body and helped me pin it to dress forms to dry. I then cut the leather into the shape I wanted and added the details using leather tools. The breast plate and shoulder armor are all very solid and I painted them with a mix of silver and black to create a more gun metal look. They are super comfortable to wear. The crotch and belt/waist cincher are also solid leather and everything is connected using leather strapping and rivets.

I also used a bit of Worbla for this costume. About $50 worth in total with some left over. Its used in the bracers, helmet and shin guards. These pieces in the movie looked to be the only pieces made out of metal. The shin guard’s rivets are made out of googly eyes. Both the shin guards and the bracers have leather straps to secure them.

The helmet was made from well made costume army helmet and worbla. I had to sand down the lip on the side, but then I used cement glue to add the pieces to the helmet. All the insides of the pieces were made with craft foam with the worbla heated and placed  over it carefully. The rivets were tack heads. After I had put all the pieces on the helmet I used wood glue to make it all smooth and to make it look welded together. I primed and painted it from there using multiple paints to give it a more realistic look. The veil hanging from the helmet is distressed leather with wire under it to make the perfect shape.

The under shirt is a jersey knit and the coat is a linen that is unfinished for a more worn look. The paints are wool and made like Renaissance breeches. They lace in the front and tuck into the boots. The boots are a pair I have worn forever, so it was perfect for the worn look. The disks hanging off the belt are plastic beads and the skirt is made in a roman style with leather. The necklace is sculpted with Sculpey and is hanging from a leather cord. The dagger is made using Model Magic for the bone hilt and worbla scraps for the blade. The blade is splatted in blood.

The wig is a Matilda in Dark Copper Red from Arda Wigs. It was styled to look like her hair when she takes off her helmet. The contacts are Geo Bella Browns from PinkyParadise.

If I Could Change One Thing…

I plan for this costume to be a continual project. I still need to make her sword and a proper quiver. I also need to add more to the chain mail and finish adding the proper findings to the straps. I’d also like to give the whole thing more details (ie mud on the jacket, house seal on the back of the breast plate, ect.)

What I Liked the Most!
That helmet was a labor of love and I LOVE how it turned out. I’m also in love with leather and how wonderful it is to work with. I’m VERY proud of this costume

Katsucon pictures from this year a forthcoming but I wanted to post something now.  This is one of the few pictures from the impromptu Star Wars shoot that made it on to my camera/phone.  Obviously it is nothing canon given that you have Jacen Solo and Marasiah Fel fighting a Sith together but it was still fun to do!  Also, I’m really freaking pleased with how Sia turned out especially once I took the time and made a few improvements to the non-debuted version.
Jacen Solo is Nate (zhobot), I’m Marasiah Fel (ourwhitehotroom), and I don’t know the name of the Sith.

Two of my very good friends from grad school were hijabis, and so when I saw this I had to do it!  I tried to make both a traditionally-female uniform variant (with more modest stovepipe pants under the minidress) and a traditionally-male uniform (complete with horrible, horrible capris.)  I wanted security, science, communication, and command!  (Note that the rank insignia are pretty bullshit, but whatev.)

I tried to do a couple different folding styles, but I think they all kind of turned out looking the same when I drew them?  Because I am not good at drawing hijabs yet.
